Mayor Bogue joins Dixon Montessori Charter School students for spelling bee Jamie Myers Special to the Tribune Dixon - Sweaty palms, elevated heart beats and brains working in overtime describe a few students of Dixon Montessori Charter School last Thursday. On March 9th, the school’s MPR was transformed into an academic arena for those who qualified and participated in the annual spelling bee. As a special treat, Dixon’s mayor, Thom Bogue, served as the pronouncer and emcee of the event. The students were thrilled to have a local celebrity take part in this special day. Mayor Bogue spoke to all of the participants and congratulated them in reaching this point of the competition stating, “I know how much work it took to get this far and represent your classes”. Thom participated in his school’s spelling bee when he was in the fourth grade and took 3rd place in his school district. “I remember studying feverishly to learn as many spelling words as I could” Thom says. “It was a challenge and goal for me that provided a lot of drive in learning to spell better”. Students of DMCS in grades 4th through 8th participated in their spelling competitions by grade level. Local teachers, Sheri Luney and Heidi Hefner, orchestrated this annual event. The winners are: • 4th grade – 1st place, Kevin Pettibone; runner-up, Aidan Schouten •5th grade – 1st place, Taylor Woo; runner-up, Jacob Morton • 6th grade – 1st place, Natasha Ajam; runner-up, Jeremiah Haskins • 7/8th grade – 1st place, Dylan Johannessen; runner-up, Elizabeth Granillo Mayor Bogue, who has nine kids of his own, says “There are many responsibilities of a mayor. Helping out at events like this, is one of the joys of this position. Having the opportunity to encourage our youth to achieve at higher levels as they grow is truly just fun!” The Dixon Montessori Charter School provides a unique combination of the Montessori and traditional school teaching methods for students in transitional kindergarten through 8th grade. Students learn in a calm, peaceful, nurturing environment where collaboration, technology, effective communication and personal integrity are taught and demonstrated throughout the learning process. While students are held to high academic standards, each child is given their own individual work plan to meet their specific academic, behavioral and social needs. Educational and creative enrichment such as music, technology, art and multiple field trips assist in building an environment of holistic education. The school’s Executive Director, Joanne Green, extends her greatest appreciation to Mayor Bogue for his involvement in the community and participation at the school’s annual spelling bee.
